June is the official start of Hurricane Season…if you live in one of the Gulf States you know of (or probably attended) a Hurricane Party at some point. Usually they occur when everyone is camped out during the “calm before the storm”.
Backstory: We celebrated my husband’s birthday years ago with such a party–stuck in our then apartment eating birthday cake with our neighbors and waiting for the storm to pass. So when I was trying to decide on a theme for his 30th I kept thinking about this particular birthday…and Hurricane Travis began to form! Here are some highlights of his 30th Birthday Hurricane Party! (Luckily…storm NOT included!)
I had my local bakery make the cake which had palm trees blowing in the wind, a grill turned over, and the “0” of the 30 in the shape of a hurricane symbol. Admittedly, this kinda made it look like he was 36 but everyone got the point ;)
The decor had to look like debris so I used waded paper, a fish net with trees/branches and street sign stuck in it, and hapazardly strewn party decor. Also, I made “Hurricane Warning” signs to post around the house.
My sister-in-law made Hurricane Warning Flags on the end of tooth picks for appetizers (unfortunately pic not included). We played Hurricane Trivia and “Pin the Eye” on the Hurricane.
I am beginning to realize how twisted this party was (pun not intended) but we did have fun!
DISCLAIMER: Hurricanes are NO JOKE…there, now I feel better!
You could serve Hurricanes as your signature drink (should you choose to throw your own Hurricane Party), knock over chairs, tape up windows…and even make “First Aid Kit” party favors (see my next post!)
