It’s no secret that I have a slight Hedgehog obsession. I’ve made Hedgehog Donut Holes, had Hedgehog Photoshoots, and our family pet is even a Hedgehog! Heck, it was either Hedgehogs or evolving into a crazy cat lady–which was really never an option since I’m unfortunately allergic. Hedgehogs are fairly low maintenance (more on this later) which is always a plus when your a single mom! Anywho, can you blame me for coming up with How to Make a Hedgehog Pencil Holder?
This is a great craft for kids, artisits, and Hedgehog Lovers alike!

First, take your wooden egg and 4 wooden beads of the same size. These will be used for the Hedgehog’s feet. Use your glue gun to attach all 4 beads to the bottom of the egg.
Let it cool and dry. Next, flip that little bugger over like so…
Now to add a face. Glue on another small wooden bead for the nose and then carefully use your 1/8″ drill bit to make the eyes. You could also use smaller beads for this if you prefer. While you have your drill out make 12 holes evenly placed all over the top on the egg (which would also now by your Hedgehog’s back). I used a pencil to mark where I wanted the holes to be prior to drilling…just kidding, I couldn’t even type that with a straight face! I eye balled it because I couldn’t wait to see how it would turn out!! But seriously, if I had it to do all over again I would use a pencil to mark by holes first…trust me. Also, (since safety is a top priority) the drilling should not be done by small children…like ever.
TIP:
Be sure to only drill about a quarter inch in or you WILL drill through to the other side (again…trust me on this one…I speak from experience). Once your done drilling your holes, give your hedgehog a good cleaning and even a few passes with a piece of sandpaper to smooth out.
If you look closely in my Hedgehog Pencil Holder Stop Motion video, you’ll see the extra hole as a consequence of not marking prior to drilling…
Finally, it’s time for THE best part…putting in your colored pencils to create the quills!!
And that how you make a Hedgehog Pencil Holder! Wouldn’t these be great gift idea for any child, artist, teacher, or member of Hedgehogs’ Anonymous?? Being that they’re miniature colored pencils and the small wooden eggs–it’s just so cute to look at! It’s also just the right size to leave on your desk…
My kids love to flip it upside-down and draw with all the “quills”. If you’re interested in learning more about Hedgehogs or would simply like to appreciate the cuteness of Penny Lane, be sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, or sign-up for a Rx of DIY in your inbox!
