How to Make a Butter Squishy

These tiny paper squishies are so simple to make! Clear packing tape gives them a smooth, durable finish that is extra fun to squeeze.

Step 1. Print the template

First, print the free mini butter squishy printable at 100% scale. Avoid selecting “fit to page” if you want the finished butter squishy to stay approximately 1 inch wide. 1 page includes 32 butter sticks in salted and unsalted designs. Print on a high quality setting for best results.

Step 2. Cut out your butter design

Choose the salted or unsalted butter stick, then carefully cut around the outside edge of the pattern.

Step 3. Fold on the dark yellow lines

Then, fold neatly along all of the dark yellow lines. A toothpick can help make the folds crisp, especially on such a tiny printable craft.

Step 4. Cover the butter label with clear packing tape

Place clear packing tape over the printed side of the cut-out butter stick. When trimming around the design, leave a small border of extra tape hanging over the paper edges.

Pro Tip: That little tape border is important! You will fold it over later to help seal and reinforce your tiny paper squishy.

Step 5. Glue the tabs and shape the squishy

Add a tiny amount of glue stick to the paper tabs. Next, fold the butter stick into its box shape and press the tabs into place leaving one end open in order to stuff.

Step 6. Secure the seams with the extra tape

Fold the extra clear tape border over the seams and sides of the squishy. This also helps hold the shape together and makes the paper squishy more durable.

Step 7. Add a little stuffing

Pull apart a small amount of cotton stuffing, polyester fiberfill, or cotton ball. Gently tuck it inside the open end. Do not overstuff your mini butter squishy (i.e. make the butter not have “give”). A little fluff leaves room for the best squish!

Step 8. Close the final side

Next, fold the last flap into place. Use the extra tape border, plus a small piece of clear packing tape if needed to seal the final end.

Step 9. Make a tiny air hole

Finally, use a push pin to poke one small air hole in the finished squishy. This lets air move out when you squeeze it and back in when you release it for the ultimate squish factor. In order to hide the hole, I punched through the “grade AA” emblem on the design.

Safety note: An adult should handle the push pin or supervise younger crafters.

Salted or Unsalted?

This free butter squishy template includes both designs because tiny butter deserves options!

  • Salted butter: A little extra personality!
  • Unsalted butter: Classic, cute, and ready for anything…

Make both, then decide which mini butter squishy has the best squish. Or go all in and make all 32 butter sticks included in the printable… because apparently tiny butter is a collection now. 🧈

Mini Butter Squishy FAQ

How big is the finished mini butter squishy?

Each finished butter squishy is approximately 1 inch wide. It is perfect for mini craft collections, dollhouse-style or Elf on the Shelf displays, classroom rewards, party favors, and tiny desk decorations.

What paper should I use for paper squishies?

Regular printer paper works best because it is easy to fold. Cardstock can work, but it may make the finished squishy stiffer and harder to squeeze.

Why do I need clear packing tape?

Clear packing tape protects the printable, creates a smooth and shiny surface, and helps the paper squishy hold up to repeated squeezing. Leaving a small tape border around the cut-out also helps seal the edges.

What can I use for the stuffing?

Either use a tiny piece of a cotton ball, polyester fiberfill, or soft tissue paper. Do not add too much because your paper squishy needs a little empty space inside to compress.

Why does the butter squishy need an air hole?

The tiny air hole lets air escape when you squeeze the squishy and move back inside when you release it. This creates a softer, more satisfying squish!

Can kids make this craft?

Yes! This is a fun classroom craft activity, teen craft, or rainy-day paper craft. However, younger children may need help with cutting, tape, and the push pin.
