How to create a DIY Luxury Picnic Party
Listen, throwing a party for a teen girl that doesn’t scream “my mom tried too hard” is basically a superpower. But here’s the thing—a boho beach chic picnic is the sweet spot where you look effortlessly cool without actually being effortless.
(Spoiler: there’s effort. So much effort. But they don’t need to know that!)
Have you seen this trend all over Pinterest and Instagram? Fancy low-ground boho picnics are everywhere right now, and honestly? They’re not just aesthetically gorgeous—they actually work as a party setup. So when my boyfriend’s daughter showed me her inspo Pinterest board, I knew we could pull together something amazing together ourselves!
Here’s the funny part: we live literally minutes away from one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Like, we’re talking crystal-clear water, pristine sand, the whole Instagram dream. And yet? I decided to host this entire boho beach chic picnic party… on the patio. In the backyard. At grandma’s. Where there’s zero chance of a surprise wind gust destroying the garland or unexpected clouds ruining the lighting. (Priorities, people!!) Turns out, the best beach in the world can wait. A perfectly styled party cannot.
Why Boho Beach Chic Low-Ground Picnics Are Peak Party Energy
We threw a boho beach-vibe low-ground picnic celebration for her, and let me tell you, it was THE vibe. No stuffy seating, no awkward standing around—just good food, good vibes, a DIY soda station, a craft activity that didn’t feel cheesy, and a setup so cute that even her friends were impressed. Here’s how we made it happen…
First, let’s talk about why this setup absolutely slaps (yeah… I said that):
It’s intimate without being weird. Everyone’s sitting on pillows…which somehow makes conversation flow better. Science? Maybe. Magic? Definitely.
Instagram potential is OFF THE CHARTS. The angles! The overhead shots! The natural light! Your teen will actually want to post photos.
You can do it ANYWHERE. Backyard, the actual beach, park, poolside…this vibe travels and thrives!
Boho luxury is literally about looking put-together while feeling relaxed. It’s the aesthetic your teen probably already loves.
The Setup: Luxury on a Budget
Seating That Actually Works
First, forget regular picnic blankets (well, don’t forget them, but add to them!). We layered:
Outdoor Rug — The goal was to have something comfy and stylish that the girls could sit on without making the table wobbly. You could use a few large picnic blankets, an outdoor rug you already have, or something similar to what we used. Amazon has incredible large rug options that cover the length of the tables and look way more expensive than they are!
Cushions/Throw Pillows — We used these covers to match the theme… pillow covers are a great way to repurpose what you already have! Honestly? Throw pillows from your couch work too. I’m not judging!
The key? Mix and match textures, and materials. It looks intentional and feels way more interesting. Plus, it’s more forgiving than a formal setup…if something’s not perfect, it just looks “boho.” Win.
The Table Situation
We went with 4 of these tables pushed together in the center. They come in packs of 2 and it was the perfect amount of space for 8 people. This is where the food and drinks live! Bonus points unlocked with the natural wood finish. We will definitely be using these again for patio parties and beach picnics.
What made the look really special was using this over the table rod flower arch where we draped eucalyptus garland, flowers, and blue gauzy cloth (fyi- this is the same cloth we used for the the table runner). The Real Talk
After a party like this, your teen might actually think you’re not like the regular moms… you’re a cool mom. All the girls had a great time and loved all the details. Boho luxury beach chic picnics hit different. They’re casual enough to feel like she and her friends just decided to hang out at the most aesthetically pleasing spot on earth, but they’re put-together enough to show that you clearly care.
Add in an interactive soda station and a cute craft activity? You’re basically a party genius.
And that’s the sweet spot.
